£4.5m North Lincolnshire municipal green waste contract stays in the Humber

A 10 year contract to treat green waste from North Lincolnshire has been won by a regional specialist.

Biowise, based at Willerby, has secured the £4.5 million deal, with an estimated 17,500 tonnes to be processed annually.

It is the 11th municipal contract now held by the company, bought out a year ago by European environmental operator Urbaser Group. And the award follows the £65 million residual waste contract being placed by the 169,000 population local authority with fellow East Yorkshire firm Transwaste.

The green waste deal will be run in partnership between Biowise, Down to Earth Recycling Ltd and Brier Hills Recycling Ltd, with more than 95 per cent of the waste to be recycled into compost. The remainder is further recycled or used as waste-to-energy feedstock.

Bob Wilkes, managing director of Biowise, which trades as Wastewise, said: “We look forward to working with North Lincolnshire Council in helping them achieve their waste management goals. The long-term contract will ensure that, together, we create clear, efficient processes to ensure an effective waste service for residents where as little as possible is wasted.”

Waste will be collected from the kerbside and directly delivered to an existing operational site, understood to be just off the A15 between Kirton in Lindsey and Scunthorpe.

A spokesperson for North Lincolnshire Council commented: “Biowise are providing us with an efficient and proven solution for the treatment of our green waste, the end product of which is high grade compost that promotes the circular economy.”

The PAS100 quality compost will be produced for horticultural and agricultural use, the majority of which will remain in the region, further reducing the carbon footprint.

Biowise also operates in-vessel composting facilities at the Willerby headquarters and in Crewe, and an open windrow composting facility near Bradford. In total it handles more than 200,000 tonnes per year of household organic waste.
