36 inmates of Haridwar jail test Covid positive

DEHRADUN: Around three dozen inmates of Haridwar jail were isolated after they tested positive for Covid-19. Their samples were collected to find out if they were infected with Hepatitis B. However, the tests showed Covid-19 infection. The health department has said that they would be kept in isolation for a week as a precautionary measure. Incidentally, these infections didn't reflect in the daily Covid bulletin which showed only 17 new positive cases from Haridwar.

TOI tried to connect Kumar Khagendra Singh, the chief medical officer of Haridwar, on the issue. However, he didn't respond despite repeated calls and messages.

Meanwhile, active Covid cases in Uttarakhand rose to 1,790 after the hill state recorded 309 fresh infections on Wednesday. The state also reported three Covid-related deaths -- two from AIIMS Rishikesh and one from Haldwani-based Susheela Tiwari Government Hospital -- on Wednesday. Among all districts, Dehradun recorded the highest 162 new Covid cases, followed by 58 in Nainital. The state’s Covid positivity stood at 12.70%.

Despite rising cases, only 2,843 samples were sent for testing on Wednesday. So far this year, the hill state has reported 98,782 Covid cases and 297 related deaths.
