A series of tragic traffic crashes in eastern Afghanistan have claimed the lives of at least 33 people and left 16 others injured, authorities reported on Sunday. The incidents occurred in different regions, highlighting the ongoing road safety challenges faced by the country.
The majority of the collisions, ten in total, took place in the Sorabi district of Kabul province along the main highway connecting the capital city, Kabul, with the eastern Nangarhar province. Khalid Zadran, spokesman for the Kabul police chief, stated that these accidents resulted in the loss of 17 lives, including two children and four women. An additional ten individuals sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to local hospitals for treatment.
Simultaneously, four more crashes unfolded near the end of the same highway, this time in the eastern Laghman province. The Laghman police chief's office released a statement confirming that 15 people were killed in these collisions. Moreover, in unrelated incidents in Laghman province, one person lost their life and six others sustained injuries. The injured individuals were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals to receive medical attention.
These heart-wrenching accidents serve as stark reminders of the persistent road safety issues in Afghanistan. With poor road conditions and drivers often disregarding traffic rules, traffic crashes have become commonplace in the region.
