Newell Brands, Viatris and News Corp. were the top three S&P 500 index gainers on the stock market today. Apache Corp., Marathon Oil and Mosaic were the S&P 500's biggest losers on Monday.
NWL stock jumped 7.9% to 24.26, reclaiming its 50-day and 200-day line. But Newell Brands, which owns a variety of household and consumer brands such as Rubbermaid, Sunbeam, Mr. Coffee, PaperMate, Elmer's, is still in the lower half of a consolidation going back about one year.
VTRS stock climbed 5.3% to 10.48, just below its 50-day line after moving above that key level intraday. But shares of the Swiss maker of generic drugs, biosimilars and over-the-counter medications are still near 13-year low.
NWS stock rose 4.1% to 17.61. Those are the B-class shares of IBD parent News Corp. The more actively traded A-class shares of News Corp. climbed 2.3%. Both hit 52-week lows last week.
S&P 500 Losers
Oil and gas stocks have been stock market winners in the past several months. But they and the broad energy sector sold off hard Monday as crude oil prices tumbled 6.1% to $103.09 a barrel, and as Wall Street sold off hard.
APA stock dived 14.9% to 37.53, skidding below its 50-day line as well. Apache stock last week reached its best levels since late 2018.
MRO stock plunged 14% to 24.22, diving below its 50-day moving average. Marathon Oil stock hit a six-year high last week.
MOS stock crashed 12.8% to 55.86, plunging decisively below its 50-day moving average and recent support. Fertilizer stocks had been huge winners in recent months but are now cracking along with many other commodity plays.
