Ure enjoys dream debut

What a night for Robbie Ure. The 18-year-old striker led the line for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side tonight. It took the teen just eight-minutes to get his first senior goal for the club. The B-team player swept home with a neat first-time finish after a lovely move up the left by the Ibrox club. The ball was played into Glen Kamara’s feet from Fashion Sakala after a Queen’s error. The former Canada international teed up Ure and the young Scot made no mistake as he beat Max Currie to open the scoring. Some of his hold-up play was decent too, especially considering that he was up against some experienced defenders. Gers fans will be hoping to see more of Ure as the season progresses.

Filthy skill from Yilmaz

The game presented the ideal opportunity to get some much-needed minutes into the legs of the Turkish international. In only his second appearance for the club, Yilmaz did very well at left-back. Of course, you’d expect a £5million player to stand out against League One opposition. However, players need to have the right attitude for games like this. His willingness to bomb forward at every available opportunity was certainly a positive for Rangers. His backheel flick to take the ball away from his marker at the second goal was superb. He then laid the ball on a plate for Scott Arfield.

Job done and up the road

From the glitz and glamour of last week’s Champions League play-off success to the bread and butter of a run-of-the-mill last-16 League Cup tie. The team selection reflected the match as several fringe and youth players were afforded the chance to impress, while the likes of James Tavernier and Connor Goldson enjoyed a rest. It’s not a performance that will live long in the memory, especially with Celtic up next and the start of the Champions League groups next midweek, but van Bronckhorst will want to add more trophies to his CV. Getting into the next round was all that mattered. To be fair to Queens, they made a decent fist of it. It could have been a lot more dull than it was.
