3 best Prime Video crime miniseries to binge-watch in one weekend

Not every series needs to stretch across multiple weeks. During the festive season in particular, the best viewing can be something compact and easy to curl up with over a few relaxed evenings. That’s where crime miniseries shine. Because they have such tightly constructed plots and (usually) definitive endings, they tend to offer all the tension and twists of a longer show without demanding a major time commitment.

Prime Video actually has an impressive selection of crime miniseries that are ideal for a one-weekend watch. If you’re filling the gap between multi-season shows, juggling a busy holiday schedule, or just in the mood for something dark and absorbing, these three Prime Video crime miniseries deserve a spot on your weekend watchlist.

‘Monsieur Spade’ (2024)

One show you probably missed last year was “Monsieur Spade,” and that’s hardly surprising. It didn’t land on a major streaming service right away (debuting initially on AMC), and January releases often pass by unnoticed thanks to the industry’s long-standing reputation as a “dump month” (a label more commonly applied to theatrical releases). Still, for anyone looking for a gripping crime series with an original story and quality writing, this one is a deeply satisfying watch.

“Monsieur Spade” follows legendary private detective Sam Spade (Clive Owen) in 1963, two decades after the events of The Maltese Falcon. Now in his 60s, Spade has retired to the small French town of Bozouls and is living a quiet life when a shocking crime disrupts his peace. After six nuns are found brutally murdered at a local convent, Spade is drawn back into the investigation. Digging deeper uncovers secrets and a cryptic connection to a mysterious child entwined in the case.

‘Three Pines’ (2022)

Just because a show is canceled doesn’t mean it isn’t worth watching. “Three Pines” proves that, delivering a complete, satisfying story in a single season and wrapping up its mystery without leaving any loose ends. This is a gripping crime mystery series that’s both charmingly cozy and suspenseful, perfect for fans of both styles. Not to mention, its snowy landscapes and stunning visuals make it a perfect winter treat this season.

Adapted from Louise Penny’s best‑selling novels, “Three Pines” follows Chief Inspector Armand Gamache (Alfred Molina) of the Sûreté du Québec as he arrives in the seemingly peaceful village of Three Pines to investigate a series of baffling murders. Over eight episodes, Gamache and his colleagues probe multiple cases and uncover long‑buried secrets among the town’s residents. Alongside solving individual crimes, he also investigates the disappearance of a young woman who haunts him.

‘River’ (2015)

At first, “River” might look like a standard police procedural, but it quickly veers into unexpected territory with unexpected twists and turns. This crime drama transcends its seemingly ordinary premise to deliver a gripping story that delves into the human mind and the ripple effects of trauma. While the concept might initially seem gimmicky, Abi Morgan’s writing and direction elevate it, making the show more compelling than it first appears.

“River” follows Detective Inspector John River (Stellan Skarsgård), a highly skilled London police detective struggling in the aftermath of his partner’s recent murder. Attempting to track down her killer, River contends with visions of deceased victims and suspects that appear in his mind, blurring his perception as he works cases. Though sidelined from the official investigation into his partner’s death, he continues pursuing leads and handling other inquiries, including tracking a potential suspect and responding to demands from a grieving family.
