A 25-year-old man has woken from a coma after crashing his motorbike while on holiday in Phuket, Thailand. Liam Kilby crashed his motorbike into the front of a shop on Monday, May 1 and was diagnosed with post-cardiac arrest syndrome and rhabdomyolysis - kidney failure.
He opened his eyes on May 8 to see his mum Mandy and sister Molly, who sold their valuables to pay for plane tickets, reports The Echo. Molly said: "We arrived on May 9, and we could only see Liam for an hour. It was horrible, because as you walk into the ICU there's a window, and we could see him through it, lying there really still. He just didn't look like himself. We walked over to him and he looked at us like he didn't recognise us, like he'd seen a ghost, and then he started crying.
"He's still not good, but he can move his head. He can't speak, but he's awake, he's trying to write stuff down, he's doing a lot better.
"We can't understand a lot of what he's trying to say, which is quite frustrating for him, but he's mouthing 'I love you' to us, and trying to speak to his brother on the phone."
Liam remains in intensive care, on kidney dialysis, and is to undergo another round of surgery. The 25-year-old is facing an £18,000 medical bill, which is increasing with each day he spends in hospital.
Molly said: "He's still not breathing for himself. He's definitely improved, but he's still got a long way to go.
"Luckily his friend's wife is Thai, and she is translating a lot of our concerns to the doctors, but they're basically saying they don't know how long it will be before he's able to leave. It's hard to tell, but we're going to see how his surgery goes today. I think once he's off the breathing machine and dialysis, he'll be a lot better."
A fund-raiser set up by Molly to help Liam with his hospital bills has already brought in more than £11,000.
