19. Crusader Kings 2

Gwent is fairly generous with its free gifts, especially when you're learning the ropes, but as with many CCGs, entry is free but new cards will cost real money. The game left developer hands at the end of 2023, but the meta will continue to evolve as players have now taken the reins to decide the future of each card's stats.

7. Final Fantasy 14 trial

It's not technically a free game, but there's enough on offer within just the trial version of Final Fantasy 14 that it'll keep you busy far longer than many of the other games on this list. As well as offering access to the base game (also known as A Realm Reborn), the expanded trial includes the Heavensward expansion, and raised the level cap from 35 all the way to 60.

6. Path of Exile

Path of Exile might be 11 years old, but it's still one of the best free Steam games out there. When it comes to how to get Steam games for free, it's a case of finding a game that's free-to-play that you'd like to dive into, and downloading it on the Steam platform client. Every now and then, a game that isn't usually free may also be available to try out for free for a limited time, so it's worth keeping an eye out.
If you're looking to snap up a game on Steam and not spend too much, it's always worth making note of the Steam sale dates that happen throughout the year. From discounts on particular genres to big seasonal events, you can often get your hands on some fantastic Steam games for a lot less during these occasions, so it's good to keep that in mind if you're after a release.
Are all games free on Steam Deck?
Most of the free games available on Steam are also available to play for free on Steam Deck. Certain games may not yet be verified (aka optimized for Valve's handheld), but many of them will still be playable. You can find out if a game is verified for Steam Deck on the game's listing page on Steam's store.
Some older indie game releases, such as Emily is Away, may not have the information included on the Steam page, but many of the games available on the platform should be able to run on the handheld. Can I gift a free game on Steam?
If you loved playing a particular free game on Steam and you want to recommend it to a friend or loved one, you might find yourself wondering if you can actually gift a free game on Steam. Well, as of right now, there isn't an option to actually gift free games to pals on the Steam client. You can send a game to someone on Steam by purchasing a priced game.
You can, however, drop your friend a link to the game's Steam page, where they'll be able to freely download the game.
Do free games count towards Steam badges?
Most games that are free-to-play on Steam won't count towards your Steam badge collection. The only exceptions tend to be when a game that isn't traditionally free is available for no cost for a limited time, and these will count towards your badge collecting.
Do Steam curators get free games?
As Steam's official page highlights, Steam Curators may get pre-release copies of games to try out on Steam ahead of launch if a game developer is sending out review copies, or games that devs want to promote to particular curators through Curator Connect. The only games that can be accessed through this system are either games that have already been released or those that have a publicly visible store page on Steam.
