24 Hours in A&E - where it's filmed and how many episodes as show moves to Nottingham

Channel 4’s hit fly-on-the-wall documentary series, 24 Hours in A&E, returns to our screens tonight (January 3). The latest series of the long-running show is the first to be filmed outside London, with production relocated to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre.

For over a decade, the programme has documented the challenges faced by NHS staff on the frontline, with cameras rolling in some of Britain’s busiest A&E departments for 24 hours at a time. Viewers see the daily dramas of life - and death - in A&E, including both serious crises as well as lighter moments.

Fans of the series will be pleased to know that the programme is back for another eight-episode run. Here’s what you need to know, and what you can expect, from the new series of 24 Hours in A&E.

When does the new series of 24 Hours in A&E start?

The first episode of the new series of 24 Hours in A&E will air on Channel 4 tonight (January 3) at 9pm. The series will give viewers a unique insight into the workings of the A&E department at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

How many episodes are there in the new series of 24 Hours in A&E?

There will be eight episodes in the new series of 24 Hours in A&E. The programme has become a mainstay of Channel 4’s line-up, having so far aired more than 250 episodes across 24 series.

Is 24 Hours in A&E staged?

No, 24 Hours in A&E is not staged. All the action that takes place in the show is real and unscripted, with the cameras left running in the chosen A&E departments around the clock in order to capture everything that goes on there.

The whole point of the series is to give viewers a unique and unvarnished view of the everyday events that typically take place in Britain's busiest A&E departments. With the NHS facing heightened difficulties this winter, viewers will see up close the challenges faced by staff working at the sharp end of the health service.

Where is 24 Hours in A&E filmed?

The new series of 24 Hours in A&E was filmed at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. This marks the first time that the hit Channel 4 has been filmed at a hospital outside of London.

“We are incredibly excited that Channel 4 have chosen the Queen’s Medical Centre as the new home of their twice BAFTA-nominated and Royal Television Society award-winning 24 Hours in A&E,” said Dr Keith Girling, the hospital’s medical director.

“This will give us a real opportunity to show the dedication, passion and skill of our teams and the care and kindness shown to our emergency patients.”

Staff from the hospital were recently treated to an early screening of the first episode from the new series. The 45-minute screening took place at Nottingham’s Broadway Cinema and was followed by a Q&A session with the programme’s producers.
