Viewers of Channel 4's NHS docuseries 24 Hours in A&E were left "bawling" after tonight's episode, with one even questioning "why I put myself through it". The series that documents the day-to-day activities of emergency NHS workers brought two particularly emotional stories from Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham tonight (January 10).
The first involved Mick, a 74-year-old man who was rushed into A&E with suspected sepsis. His wife, Dot, shared her experiences as his full-time carer as viewers witnessed A&E staff work to ascertain his condition and how to manage his condition.
Tonight's episode also featured Keith, who was taken into hospital with a high heart rate that medical staff worked to bring down. He was seen undergoing treatment at Queen's as his wife watched on.
Both stories ended up with good results, with Mick defying concerns that he may not have long to live and back at home being cared for by Dot, and Kevin successfully undergoing a procedure for a heart condition "that required urgent treatment".
The journey of these two stories left viewers welling up, with viewers confessing to "bawling their eyes out" and feeling the effects of experiencing the patients' stories. They took to Twitter to share their reactions, with some even wondering how they manage to watch these stories unfold.
@ellieeCxo was left particularly affected, tweeting during the show: "Why do I put myself through watching 24 hours in A&E when it makes me ball [sic] my eyes out every single time?"
@Laura_Rads found themselves asking similar questions, saying: "This is why I don’t watch 24 Hours in A&E" along with a number of crying faces.
@AlexPaterson0 also found the show a rollercoaster, saying: "This show throws every emotion at you." @DamiSpooky seemed to be thinking the same, simply tweeting: "24hours in A&E is so intense damn."
@frankera11 saw the beauty in the way the stories were resolved, saying: "24 Hours in A&E perfectly demonstrating the power of love with Mick recovering from the edge of death with the care of his devoted wife. Beautiful."
