23 Nottinghamshire schools to get share of £9.5m upgrades

More than 20 schools across Nottinghamshire will receive improvements worth £9.5 million with work ranging from replacing ceilings to renovating kitchens. Nottinghamshire County Council has released details of an investment programme that will see primaries in areas such as Mansfield and Newark receiving upgrades.

As well as the infrastructure work, a brand new permanent school is set to open next September in East Leake as part of a £14 million project which has already provided a temporary building in the area. Meanwhile, part of a £60 million Government fund will be used to expand the Newark Orchard School and to open a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities facility at the King Edward School in Mansfield.

Finally, a new primary school will be created in Rushcliffe and two current schools in the area will be expanded. In terms of the infrastructure upgrades, Nottinghamshire County Council says 23 primary and infant schools will benefit over the next two years.

Councillor Tracey Taylor, the Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at the county council, said: "Every borough or district will receive a slice of investment from the programme. We pledged in our ten-year council plan to provide sufficient school places and to give parents a greater choice and getting our schools' infrastructure up to speed will help towards this ambition."

All works are set to be finished by September 2024, with each district or borough of Nottinghamshire containing at least two schools receiving improvements. The work is being funded by the council's School Building Improvement Programme (SPIB).

Councillor Keith Girling, the Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Asset Management at the county council, said: "The new Spencer Academies Trust-sponsored East Leake primary school will be of huge benefit to a village which many new families have joined in recent years. I know local parents will welcome our plans to expand Newark Orchard School and support SEND pupils in Mansfield with a new provision at King Edward School."
