21 IDF soldiers killed in Gaza, deadliest day since October

21 IDF soldiers killed in southern Gaza during military operation.

In a devastating blow to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), 21 soldiers were killed during a military operation in southern Gaza on Monday. This marks the largest loss of life for Israeli troops since October 7th and brings the total number of Israeli soldiers killed during the Gaza ground invasion to 219.

The incident occurred as the soldiers were engaged in clearing buildings near the Gaza border, about 600 meters away, in central Gaza. They were tasked with laying explosives to ensure the safe return of Israeli citizens to their homes across the border. Around 4 p.m. on Monday, an RPG was fired at a tank in the area, simultaneously causing explosions in two buildings where the Israeli troops were operating. Tragically, the collapsing buildings claimed the lives of all 21 soldiers involved. The cause of the explosions is currently under investigation.

Israeli Prime Minister expressed his sorrow over the events and described the day as one of the most difficult since the conflict began. Simultaneously, the IDF launched a major offensive in the city of Khan Yunis, located further south in Gaza. They have successfully encircled the area and are targeting the Khan Yunis Brigade, a significant Hamas military unit. Dozens of militants have reportedly been killed in the past 24 hours amid the intense fighting.

While Israel continues its military operations, the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates further. Al-Nasr Hospital, where thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought shelter, is now urged by the Israeli military to be evacuated. However, due to the heavy fighting and blockage of many roads, fleeing the area has become extremely challenging for the Palestinians.

The massive loss of life among Israeli soldiers only adds to the mounting domestic and international pressure facing the Israeli Prime Minister. The soldiers killed were all reservists, many of whom were above the age of 30 and had been away from their families for three months. The tragedy is expected to intensify the growing internal pressure in Israel to allow the reservists to return to their normal lives.

In addition to the military situation, negotiations to secure the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza have reached a critical stage. Israeli officials were anticipating a breakthrough in the negotiations on Monday when the tragic incident occurred. While the negotiations have not been halted, the incident has undoubtedly shaken up the process.

As the situation develops, many moving parts and significant news continue to emerge regarding the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
