South Lanarkshire Council will be tasked with looking at whether 20 mile per hour speed limits are needed on certain roads across the area.
As part of a Scottish Government framework, the local authority will have the responsibility of conducting an assessment of the existing road network to implement 20 mile per hour speed limits in certain areas.
Councillors on the Road Safety Forum will hear of the plans tomorrow (November 1) which are set out in the Scotland’s Road Safety Framework to 2030, which was launched last year by the Scottish Government.
The Framework sets out national targets and measures for casualty reduction until 2030, to which each roads authority has to contribute towards.
The National Strategy for 20 miles per hour limits aims to expand the speed limits across Scotland and ensure all appropriate roads in built-up areas have a safer speed limit by 2025.
The aim of launching more speed limits is to introduce perceptions of road danger, encourage people to walk, wheel and cycle and to create more pleasant streets and neighbourhoods.
The outcome of South Lanarkshire Council’s road assessment will help in assisting the decision-making process and will be used to inform policy, guidance and ministerial updates.
