There were some whispers leading up to the draft this year that the Rams might consider taking a quarterback early. They never really had a chance to draft one of the top passers so we won’t know how serious they were about potentially selecting a quarterback, but it’s a position Les Snead and Sean McVay must start thinking about soon.
The 2025 draft could be the perfect time for the Rams to select their quarterback of the future. Matthew Stafford is 36 years old and if he doesn’t get a new contract, he’s only signed through 2026 and doesn’t have much guaranteed money left after this season.
ESPN’s Matt Miller released a new 2025 mock draft on Tuesday and he has the Rams landing their successor at quarterback. He sent Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman to the Rams in Round 1 at No. 19 overall.
In the leadup to the 2024 draft, sources around the NFL told me often that the Rams were a sneaky team to keep an eye on with the quarterbacks. That didn’t ultimately play out, but I’m watching them closely in 2025 with Matthew Stafford now 36 years old. Weigman started just four games for A&M last year before a season-ending foot injury, but he flashed with eight touchdowns through the air and two more on the ground. He is more of a projection at this stage, but the talent is there for him to push into the Round 1 conversation — and potentially be L.A.’s QB of the future.
This season is a big one for Weigman, who’s played just nine games in the last two years and has just 16 career touchdown passes. He suffered a season-ending foot injury after just four games last year but he played well when healthy, completing 68.9% of his passes for 979 yards with eight touchdown passes and two picks.
At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, he’s not the biggest quarterback but there’s no question he has the size to succeed at the position in the NFL. He even brings some athleticism and mobility to the table, something McVay has always liked in a quarterback.
Whether it’s Weigman or another top passer, don’t be surprised if the Rams draft Stafford’s heir in the first round next April.
