2024 NFL trade deadline: Jets end up shipping out wide receiver anyway

The New York Jets have decided to end their experiment with wide receiver Mike Williams.

Williams, 30, signed a one-year contract in New York this offseason.

Now he’s a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It was announced that Williams was traded to the Steel City ahead of the 2024 NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m. Reportedly the Steelers will send a 2025 fifth-round pick to New York in exchange for the 30-year-old wideout:

In recent weeks, Williams has been in a bit of a odd place in New York.

After quarterback Aaron Rodgers appeared to call Williams out after the Jets lost 23-20 to the Buffalo Bills in Week 6, the team traded for All-Pro receiver Davante Adams in the ensuing days.

After those two moments, Williams sat out a few practices due to “personal reasons,” but he did eventually return to the Jets… now only to be traded.

With the addition of Adams and the successes wide receiver Allen Lazard has also had this season in New York, Williams became expendable. The only layer of Williams being traded that is surprise revolves around Lazard currently dealing with a chest injury… but evidently that did not stop the Jets from dealing Williams to the Steelers.

Returning from an ACL injury in 2023, Williams never hit his stride with the Jets. In nine games this year with New York, he only had 12 catches for 166.
