The New York Giants made a big splash on Monday, acquiring edge rusher Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers in a trade that also saw multiple picks headed in each direction.
The full trade details are broken down as follows:
- Giants receive: Brian Burns, pick No. 166
- Panthers receive: Picks No. 39 and 141, a 2025 Round 5 pick
At the time of the trade, the two 2024 fifth-round picks were one spot higher (No. 140 and No. 165). However, the NFL revealed on Monday that it had committed an error in the compensatory pick formula and changed one of the Cincinnati Bengals’ sixth-round picks into a third-round pick.
Because of that change, every pick after No. 97 overall was moved down one spot.
Following the trade and the NFL’s adjustment to the Bengals’ picks, the Giants’ updated 2024 draft selections are…
- Round 1 (No. 6)
- Round 2 (No. 47, from Seattle)
- Round 3 (No. 70)
- Round 4 (No. 107)
- Round 5 (No. 166, from Carolina)
- Round 6 (No. 183)
Although the Giants need as much draft capital as possible, Burns is a known asset and more valuable than any edge rusher the Giants could have taken at No. 39 overall. It also immediately improves an area of need.
General manager Joe Schoen still has three top-70 picks to work with but no longer has the assets necessary to trade up (if that’s a route they wanted to go in Round 1).
