The New York Giants hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft and it’s not overly difficult to determine their plans.
If one of the top three quarterbacks falls to them, it would be impossible to pass that opportunity up. If they don’t, general manager Joe Schoen will have his pick of the top remaining wide receivers (assuming Marvin Harrison Jr. is gone).
There are other options, however. And the Giants have begun exploring them.
Ralph Vacchiano of FOX Sports reports that the Giants have inquired about possibly trading up. And possibly trading down.
Multiple league sources said the Giants have made inquiries about trading up. It should also be noted that they’ve talked to at least one team about trading down, so these conversations may be more due diligence than anything else.
If the Giants do move in Round 1, it’s more likely to be a trade-back than a trade-up.
As Vacchiano notes, the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots are all but locked into place 1-2-3. There is also the increasing likelihood that the Minnesota Vikings trade up to either No. 5 or No. 6 with a target on J.J. McCarthy or whatever other quarterback falls to those spots.
Also, keep two other things in mind: For all the talk about trading out of the top-3 picks, there aren’t many people around the NFL that really think the Bears, Commanders or Patriots would do that when they all need a franchise quarterback. The Cardinals and Chargers at 4 and 5 certainly could trade down, but the Vikings — who just acquired a second first-round pick and can offer both 11 and 23 — probably can and will offer more than the Giants.
In other words, the Giants trading up seems unlikely, too.
The Giants do need more draft assets given the barren nature of their roster, but four quarterbacks being taken over the first six picks actually bodes well for general manager Joe Schoen.
Given the team’s commitment to Daniel Jones, their best course of action would be to take the top available wide receiver. And in this scenario, they may get lucky and have their pick of Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, and Rome Odunze.
