The Jacksonville Jaguars headed into the 2022 offseason needing to add more weapons for second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence. They started to address those needs at the start of free agency Monday by signing former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Christian Kirk, but decided to add more help for the passing game afterward.
The team is also expected to sign former New York Giants tight end Evan Engram, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler. They reported Engram intends to sign a one-year, fully-guaranteed $9 million deal that could go to $10 million with incentives.
Engram, 27, is a former first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss. In six seasons with the Giants, he amassed 2,828 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. He comes to the Jags with a puzzling injury history, missing games in four out of the last five seasons. Engram also failed to snag more than three touchdowns since his rookie season. However, he still has the size to be a mismatch for opposing defenses.
General manager Trent Baalke needed to add another receiving option at tight end with James O’Shaughnessy set to walk during free agency and does get another one with Engram. He is still considered a risk like most free-agent skill players, but it’s good Jacksonville got him on a one-year deal similar to what Eric Ebron got with the Pittsburgh Steelers a while ago.
Engram will join the tight end room with Dan Arnold and second-year player Luke Farrell. He will also add a great deal of starting experience to the room with 51 career starts to his name.
