Two first-round picks weren’t enough for Joe Douglas. Not with pass rusher Jermaine Johnson still on the board.
The Jets traded the 35th, 69th and 163rd picks to the Titans for the 26th and 101st picks. Gang Green then used the 26th pick on Johnson, giving Douglas a first-round haul that also includes CB Ahmad Gardner and WR Garrett Wilson.
There had been a lot of buzz surrounding Johnson and the Jets leading up to the draft, so it’s not surprising to see that Douglas pounced as the Florida State product fell down the board. The Jets desperately needed to add a pass-rusher alongside Carl Lawson; Johnson gives them exactly that.
Johnson tallied 11.5 sacks in 2021, his lone season with the Seminoles after two years at Georgia. Johnson also recorded 24 TFLs, which adds to his fit in Jeff Ulbrich’s defense, and 70 combined tackles.
He finished his college career with 18 sacks.
