KenPom Prediction: 58-54 Aztecs
The Aztecs are in the field no matter what, but adding wins may help with their seeding. The Fresno State Bulldogs are hopeful for an NIT invite, and beating SDSU would go a long way in that regard.
Fresno State squeaked past San Jose State in its opening round game, by winning in overtime over the 11th seeded Spartans by a score of 69-67.
San Diego State took both games during the season, by an average of 9 points. That may not matter all that much, as Fresno State had beaten San Jose State by an average of 25 points and just barely beat them in overtime in the first round. The game figures to be another rock fight, just like the first two were.
On top of having more talent and sweeping the regular season, the Aztecs will be rested as they didn’t play on Wednesday, while Fresno St. just finished an overtime game in the last game on Wednesday. They’ll have to recover from that quickly in order to beat SDSU.
Both teams will key in on their opponent’s star and try to force role players to beat them. The Aztecs will throw defenders at Orlando Robinson, while the Bulldogs will throw defenders at Matt Bradley.
In the end, the difference between talent and fatigue should carry the Aztecs to victory to face either Utah St. or Colorado St.
Prediction: 66-58 Aztecs
