2022 confirmed as Scotland's hottest year on record by Met Office

The Met Office says Scotland had it hottest year on record in 2022.

Weather experts announced the highest average temperature ever charted in one year as Scots saw an annual average of 8.50C, beating the previous record of 8.43°C from 2014.

The global heatwave in July didn't miss and baked Scots, with the record temperature for the year scored at 31 °C in Aboyne in Aberdeenshire.

Last year Scotland suffered extreme weather throughout 2022 and even recorded the coldest December in the UK in over decade in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, at -15.7°C.

Flooding also hit northern and southern parts of Scotland in November after heavy rainfall caused chaos across the country.

All other UK nations had scored their hottest ever year in 2022, with an average temperature above 10C recorded for the first time in Britain.

Dr Mark McCarthy, head of the Met Office National Climate Information Centre, says this is 'notable' moment.

He said: "Although an arbitrary number, the UK surpassing an annual average temperature of 10C is a notable moment in our climatological history.

"This moment comes as no surprise, since 1884 all the 10 years recording the highest annual temperature have occurred from 2003.

"It is clear from the observational record that human-induced global warming is already impacting the UK's climate."

Met Office climate attribution scientist Dr Nikos Christidis said: “To assess the impact of human-induced climate change on the record-breaking year of 2022, we used climate models to compare the likelihood of a UK mean temperature of 10C in both the current climate and with historical human climate influences removed.

“The results showed that recording 10C in a natural climate would occur around once every 500 years, whereas in our current climate it could be as frequently as once every three to four years.”
