With the first preseason game in the books, the first round of roster cuts are upon us, where the Chicago Bears have to trim their roster from 90 to 85 players before 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
This is the first of three roster cuts the Bears will have to make this summer.
- Tuesday, Aug. 16: 90 to 85
- Tuesday, Aug. 23: 85 to 80
- Tuesday, Aug. 30: 80 to 53
The Bears already waived undrafted rookie Carson Taylor, which means they still have to cut four players, which we’ll track below.
UPDATE: The Bears have trimmed their roster to 85 players. See the roster moves below:
WAIVED: DE Carson Taylor
Taylor, an undrafted rookie free agent out of Northern Arizona, was Chicago’s first roster cut. Taylor impressed on several occasions during the offseason program, but he’s had a relatively quiet training camp. It certainly doesn’t help that he already faced an uphill battle for a roster spot considering the defensive end group is a loaded one with Robert Quinn, Trevis Gipson, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Mario Edwards and Dominique Robinson.
WAIVED: TE Rysen John, LB Noah Dawkins
The Bears announced two additional cuts in tight end Rysen John and linebacker Noah Dawkins. With injuries at tight end, John saw increased reps and even worked with the starters. But it appears he wasn’t long for the roster. Meanwhile, Dawkins had been dealing with an injury, and he faced an uphill battle to win a roster spot at linebacker.
SIGNED: OL Corey Dublin, DB Jon Alexander
Technically, the John and Dawkins cuts don’t count toward the final roster cuts because the Bears made two corresponding roster moves. Chicago signed offensive lineman Corey Dublin and defensive back Jon Alexander. Dublin, an undrafted rookie out of Tulane, has versatility at guard and center. He also had a minicamp tryout with the Bears back in May. Alexander signed as an undrafted rookie with the Bears this spring and was waived earlier this month. Now, he’s back in Chicago.
