US President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on generic medicines could pose a major challenge for India's pharmaceutical exporters, but the country's cost advantage may help several Indian drugs remain competitive in the US market, according to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI).
The think tank, in a report titled “India's Generic Drug Exports Face New U.S. Tariff Threat”, said many Indian generic medicines are priced seven to 10 times lower than branded alternatives, which could allow them to remain cost competitive even after the proposed tariffs of up to 200% come into effect from August 2029.
