Boogie Nights (1997)

What It’s About: After getting spotted by a prolific adult film director, a young and impressionable teenager becomes one of the biggest stars of the industry.

What To Expect: A good place to start if you’re getting into PTA’s work, Boogie Nights is an unflinching, uncomfortable (at times), and unforgettable deep dive into the dynamics and personalities of the adult film industry in the 1970s. Filled with sex, drugs, and rock and roll, this iconic ‘90s flick is something.

Baby Boy (2001)

What It’s About: A bike mechanic at a crossroads in his life tries to make sense of the world around him, which becomes increasingly more complicated as it unfolds.

What To Expect: Like another great movie from the late John Singleton, Baby Boy is a hard-hitting, emotionally gruelling, and traumatic coming-of-age story set in Los Angeles. It’s violent, and it’s sexual, but it’s full of great lessons learned along the way.

That said, the uninitiated are in for one wild ride with this movie’s bonkers stories, captivating performances, and the filmmaker’s knack for making audiences laugh their way through the discomfort.

What It’s About: When two men meet in a support group for people who’ve lost their twin sibling, they have no idea they’re about to start a hot-and-heavy yet potentially devastating relationship.

What To Expect: Judging by the brief synopsis above, it’s no secret that Twinless is a heavy movie. That said, it has a charm, sense of humor, and quirky romance that make it so much fun to watch.

Good Luck To You, Leo Grande (2022)

What It’s About: A widowed retiree forms a strong bond with a male sex worker during several encounters in a hotel room.

What To Expect: This delightfully sex-positive movie does have some racy scenes, but it also has a lot of heart. If you’re looking for laughs and passion, this one is going to do the trick.
