2 AMU staff, minor, elderly man run over by truck

AGRA: Four people, including two Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) employees, were killed and three were grievously injured when they were run over by an allegedly drunk truck driver in Aligarh on Sunday morning.

The dead were identified as Mohammad Sabir, a lab assistant in the ophthalmology department in AMU, Munne Khan, an attendant in the varsity, and 12-year-old Farhan. The fourth victim was identified as Kalauddin (65) who died in a hospital while undergoing treatment.

Sabir’s wife Praveen’s condition is critical and she is battling for life in hospital. Proctor of the university Prof Wasim Ali confirmed the death of the two employees.

Police said they were informed that a truck driver had hit a couple riding on a bike in an area under Kawarsi police jurisdiction. Some five minutes later, around 11:30 am, the same truck mowed down two others, including the minor boy, in the Civil Lines area.

Circle officer Shwetabh Pandey told TOI that the truck driver has been arrested. He was drunk and was trying to escape after hitting the bike when the second accident took place. He ran over some roadside shops, including a fruitseller’s cart, while taking a speedy turn. He said two FIRs would be registered as two accidents were reported under two police stations limits.
