2,000 more ‘excess’ deaths in first week of year ahead of nurses’ strike

Britain suffered nearly 2,000 more deaths than normal in the first week of January, new figures revealed today, amid a continuing crisis in NHS emergency care.

There were a total of 14,983 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending January 6, according to the Office for National Statistics.
