1p heating hack will keep warm all night this winter

With the colder weather rolling in, and soaring energy bills, many of us are struggling to find the right balance to keep warm.

There are a number of tips and tricks to avoid the cold without using lots of energy doing the rounds at the moment. And it can sometimes be hard to work out what is best.

But sleep experts from Silentnight have now uncovered a "1p hack" to stay warm and cosy.

They say people are missing out on using an electric blanket, as they believe they are too expensive to run. But a new blanket can cost as little as a penny to heat your entire bed.

Using your electric blanket throughout the year for one hour a day will cost you between £12 – £15, as opposed to turning the thermostat up by just one degree which is going to cost you somewhere in the region of about £80 over the year.

And if you don't want to use any electricity at all, you could also not try a self-heating mattress topper. These are proven to retain more heat in your bed than just a protector.

Sally Bonser from Silentnight said: “It’s no surprise that so many of us are looking for alternative ways to heat our homes this autumn, however it’s concerning to see some of the methods people are turning to as they could actually cost them more in the long run.

“Turning on the fire or using electric appliances like kettles for making plenty of hot drinks, or hair dryers to heat the bed can be costly in the long run, whereas using an electric blanket costs just 1p to heat your entire bed. A lot of people also mistakenly think electric blankets can be unsafe, but Silentnight’s electric blankets are approved by BEAB and have a sleep safe guarantee. They are also machine washable due to their detachable controllers.

“The bedroom is often one of the hardest rooms in the house to heat, as they are likely to have external walls and aren’t used much throughout the day, so it’s important people know the different ways to keep warm at night without the temptation to turn up that heating.”
