Nearly 200 Micro Bird school buses are being recalled because an incorrectly routed wiring harness could become damaged and cause the bus to lose drive power while on the road.
Corp. Micro Bird, Inc. is recalling 197 model year 2025 and 2026 G5e school buses under National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign number 26V594000.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem involves an electrical wiring harness that may have been incorrectly routed during manufacturing. A metal bracket can come into contact with the harness and damage it.
If enough damage occurs, the bus could lose drive power.
Loss of Drive Power Can Increase Crash Risk
NHTSA warns that a loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
That concern is particularly significant for school buses because they routinely operate in traffic while transporting students and frequently stop for loading and unloading.
The recall doesn’t include a “Do Not Drive” or “Park Outside” advisory, according to the current recall information. However, owners and fleet operators should still have affected vehicles repaired under the recall.
The affected component is categorized by NHTSA under the vehicle’s electrical system and wiring.
Micro Bird’s internal number for the recall is 26-122-HUS.
Micro Bird Will Inspect and Repair the Buses for Free
Micro Bird’s remedy begins with an inspection of the wiring harness.
The company will replace the harness when necessary and properly secure it to prevent contact with the metal bracket. Recall inspection and repair work will be performed free of charge.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 10, 2026.
Owners don’t necessarily have to wait for a letter to investigate whether a vehicle is affected. NHTSA allows vehicle owners and fleet operators to search for open safety recalls using a vehicle identification number.
School Districts Can Check Individual Buses by VIN
School districts, private schools, contractors and other operators with Micro Bird G5e buses from the 2025 or 2026 model years can use NHTSA’s recall lookup tool to check individual vehicles.
A VIN search can show whether a specific vehicle has an unrepaired safety recall associated with it. NHTSA says a vehicle’s 17-character VIN can generally be found through vehicle documentation or on the vehicle itself.
That can be particularly useful for fleet managers who operate multiple buses and need to determine which individual vehicles require recall work rather than assuming every G5e from those model years is included.
Micro Bird owners can also contact the company’s Customer Service department at 819-477-2012 and reference recall number 26-122-HUS.
Recall Repairs Shouldn’t Cost the Owner
Federal safety recalls are repaired at no charge to vehicle owners through the manufacturer’s recall process. NHTSA advises vehicle owners to arrange free repairs when an open recall is identified and to follow any special instructions issued by the manufacturer.
For school-bus operators, addressing an open recall also helps avoid leaving a known safety defect unresolved in a vehicle used for student transportation.
The current Micro Bird recall doesn’t mean every 2025 or 2026 G5e school bus has the defective wiring routing. The recall covers certain vehicles identified by the manufacturer.
Fleet operators should therefore check affected buses by VIN, contact Micro Bird or an authorized service provider about the remedy, and retain documentation showing when the recall inspection or repair was completed.
