A flag flown at Wembley Stadium during England's victorious World Cup campaign of 1966 is expected to sell for thousands of pounds. The iconic flag will be auctioned weeks before the start of the Qatar World Cup finals in November.
It features an image of the original Jules Rimet Cup set against the Union Jack and embroidered with the words ‘World Championship’. The flag, believed to have belonged to a fan, was part of the 1966 World Cup 50th Anniversary Exhibition at Manchester’s National Football Museum in 2016.
It is set to fetch between £2,000-£3,000 when it goes under the hammer with other football memorabilia at Hansons Auctioneers on November 3. An England cap awarded to Sir Bobby Moore for an England v Hungary match on May 31, 1962, is also up for grabs and expected to sell for between £15,000 and £20,000.
The auction also includes a shirt worn by Argentinian star Sergio Aguero when he scored the winning goal in Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers in the last match of the 2011-12 season. His goal in added time secured the title for the Blues for the first time in 44 years – the shirt has a guide price of £15,000-£20,000.
A rare Nottingham Forest 1993-95 long-sleeved away shirt which England legend Stuart Pearce refused to wear is also tipped to sell for £800. Also being auctioned is a 15ct gold medal awarded to Derby County forward Harry Leonard after the team won the Football League Division 2 title in 1914 - the final full season before the First World War.
The inscription on the medal reads: “The Football League Champions Div. 2 1914-15 Derby County FCH Leonard.” It is expected to sell for up £3,000.
The centre forward scored 19 goals in 32 appearances during the Rams’ 1914-15 title-winning season. Just months after winning the league, Leonard went to serve in the Royal Engineers during the war before returning to football in the 1920s.
In addition, an original Shrovetide football dating back to 1927 which was used in the annual Shrove Tuesday game in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, is being sold with an expected price tag of between £2,000 and £3,000.
