17-year-old boy dies after crash in Co Cavan and two others hospitalised with serious injuries

A 17-year-old male has died in a collision involving a car and a lorry in Co Cavan on Thursday evening.

Gardai are currently at the scene and have closed the road to allow for a technical examination to be carried out.

The boy was seriously injured following a collision on the N3, Kilnalack in Co Cavan at around 6pm on Thursday, June 9. The incident occurred between Butlersbridge and Belturbet.

He was taken to Cavan General Hospital where he later passed away.

A woman in her 50s and a man in his 40s have also been taken to Cavan General Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are currently conducting a technical examination on the road. Motorists are advised that the road is closed and diversions are in place.

A spokesperson from An Garda Siochana said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of a two vehicle fatal road traffic collision, involving a car and lorry that occurred on the N3, Kilnalack, Co. Cavan at approximately 6pm this evening, Thursday 9th June 2022.

“The road is currently closed to allow for a technical examination to be conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place."

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have information are asked to come forward to the Gardai in Cavan Garda Station on 049 436 8800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or their local station.

The spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N3 between Butlersbridge and Belturbet, between 5:45pm and 6:30pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station on 049 436 8800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
