A 39-year-old woman has died after an alleged hit-and-run crash outside of Darwin overnight.
In a statement on Sunday morning, NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services said they were called to the scene on Power Road, Girraween at 2:30am.
Police allege the driver left the area without stopping to help the victim.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested that morning by authorities at a property in Humpty Doo, where police allege he tested positive for alcohol.
Late on Sunday, he was charged with hit and run causing death and driving as a provisional driver with alcohol in his blood.
Police are also awaiting the results of a forensic toxicological analysis to determine if the boy had illicit drugs in his system at the time.
He has been bailed ahead of a scheduled court appearance on October 10, 2022.
NT Police said members of the public had helped investigators to track down the alleged driver.
They also said investigators had interviewed "a number of" passengers travelling in the vehicle at the time, and had collected evidence from two separate crime scenes.
Power Road remained closed on Sunday morning as Major Crash and Crime Division detectives investigated the incident, but has since been reopened.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said the incident was "another tragic loss of life on NT roads involving alcohol".
"It continues a pattern of motorists involved in pedestrian collisions choosing to continue driving rather than stopping to help as lawfully required," he said.
The incident takes the Northern Territory's road toll to 41 so far in 2022, 15 deaths higher than this time last year and six deaths more than in 2021 overall.
The territory leads the nation in road deaths per capita, over four times the national average according to a recent report.
