150,000 to fly out of Stansted over bank holiday weekend

Stansted Airport will carry 150,000 passengers over the bank holiday weekend, as British Airways returns to the Essex hub.

In total, 845,000 passengers will be travelling to or from Stansted May 25 and June 2, including 150,000 departures on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Top destinations for Londoners seeking breaks include the Canary Islands, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Dubai, Dublin, Edinburgh and Barcelona.

Jon Fowler, London Stansted’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “With places not as busy as during the peak summer season and pleasant temperatures in many of the destinations we serve at this time of year, the spring half-term break is a popular time to get away.

“We’ve a busy week ahead so the advice as always is to allow good time for your journey to the airport and prepare for the security checks before leaving home to avoid any unnecessary delays.”

Earlier this week, British Airways restarted flights from Stansted, with trips to Nice, Florence, and Ibiza.

Ciaran Brannigan, London Stansted’s Commercial Director, said: “London Stansted serves more European destinations than any other UK airport and these new services to Ibiza, Florence and Nice are strong additions to our route network, which now covers over 200 destinations across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

“I’m sure these routes will be very popular with passengers from across London, Cambridge and the growing East of England region. We look forward to working closely with British Airways to build a strong working relationship and ensure these new flights are a success.”

Today also marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of London-listed and Hungary-based Wizz Air, which previously flew out of Stansted but currently uses Gatwick and Luton as its main London bases. Wizz executives opened the London Stock Exchange this morning.
