The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has listed some 15 allowances that could equal thousands of pounds in savings for some state pension claimants. The benefits could be a lifeline as the rising cost of living impact takes hold.
The age at which you can claim state pension depends upon when you were born. For instance, at the moment people reaching 66 can claim. However, for those born after 5 April 1960, there will be a phased increase in State Pension age to 67 and then eventually 68. Then of course there is pension credit.
Pension Credit gives the claimant extra money to help with living cost if they're drawing state pension and on a low income. There are potentially thousands of pounds worth of extra help available. People are usually eligible for pension credit if they earn less than £182.60 a week, after expenses are taken into account.
