AHMEDABAD: After 21 years in jail and 14 years since he was awarded life imprisonment, a murder convict will approach the Gujarat high court challenging the sentencing order. Jesal Dhana Koli, 53, of Nani Rav village in Kutch, was convicted for killing nine people of a family in July 2001 but he could not appeal against his conviction due to poverty wherein he had no resources to pursue further legal recourse.
The Supreme Court has directed him to file an appeal after he along with 20 other convicts approached the apex court following a trial court punishing 26 persons with life imprisonment for the massacre. While Jesal’s incarceration is likely to continue, there are 14 others who got bail after spending 21 years in jail; the SC had ordered for their release on bail last week.
