A 14-year-old girl was shot in the head by her neighbour while playing hide and seek, police say.
Officers were called to the scene in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in the early hours of May 7 over an apparent shooting.
Police found a 14-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of her head.
She was rushed to hospital and thankfully her injuries have been assessed as non-life threatening.
Investigators from CPSO Violent Crimes figured out that several children had been playing hide and seek in the area and were hiding on their neighbour’s property.
After speaking to the property owner David V. Doyle, 58, officers were able to piece together what they think happened.
Doyle told them he saw shadows outside his house so went to get his gun. When he went back outside he saw people running away and opened fire, police say.
It was during this burst of fire, the 14-year-old girl was shot but Doyle said he hit her unknowingly.
He was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with aggravated battery; four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm; and illegal discharge of a firearm.
His bond has not yet been set.
The investigation is continuing. CPSO Detective Lauren Manuel is the lead investigator on this case.
An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offence alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Last month a 6-year-old girl was allegedly shot in the face by an "armed and dangerous" man after her basketball accidentally rolled into his garden.
Kinsley White was rushed to hospital after suspect Robert Louis Singletary, 24, came out of his house on April 19 and allegedly fired shots across the street in North Carolina, US, after the ball ended up on his property.
He is accused of shooting three people, including the girls' parents, and allegedly threatened to kill her dad William White, as he tried to shield the pair from the shooter.
Mum Ashley Hilderbrand claims he shouted: “I’m going to kill you” during the horrific attack which left William in hospital where he currently remains.
A fourth person was shot at but did not suffer injuries, according to police.
Kinsley was released a day later following her injuries as she appeared on local station WSOC-TV with stitches on her face asking why the gunman attacked her.
She said: “He came out with a gun, he started shooting. I hope my daddy is ok. Why did you shoot my daddy and me? Why did you shoot a kid’s dad?”
Her mum Ashley was grazed by the shooting and treated at the scene, according to authorities.
Singletary fled but was later arrested.
