14 Dead In Serbia Railway Station Roof Collapse

A concrete roof above the entrance of a railway station in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad collapsed Friday, killing at least 14 people with more feared buried under the rubble, officials said.

On Friday, a devastating incident occurred in northern Serbia when the roof of a railway station in Novi Sad collapsed, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 14 lives. The city, located approximately 70 kilometers northwest of Belgrade, was the site of the disaster that also left more than 30 individuals injured.

Rescue operations are currently ongoing at the scene, with reports indicating that two survivors have been rescued from the rubble and are receiving medical treatment. Efforts are underway to reach two other individuals who remain trapped beneath the debris.

Serbia's Interior Minister, Ivica Dacic, confirmed the updated death toll and stated that nearly 80 rescuers have been deployed to assist in the operation. Despite the swift response of emergency services, the rescue mission is expected to continue for several more hours.

The community has come together to mourn the victims, with local residents lighting candles outside the train station. The government has declared a day of mourning in honor of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident.

Prime Minister Miloš Vucevic expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and praised the efforts of the first responders. He also assured the public that those responsible for the collapse would be held accountable for their actions.

Reports indicate that the railway station's roof underwent renovations in 2021, with additional work completed just months before the building was reopened earlier this year on July 5. The investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing as authorities work to determine the factors that led to this devastating event.
