131 new homes in Paisley as completed development gets thumbs up from councillors

The completion of 131 homes in Paisley's Glenburn has been welcomed by councillors.

A total of 109 properties have been delivered for social rent while 22 were made available through the New Supply Shared Equity scheme, which allows eligible residents to buy a new-build with assistance from the Scottish Government.

The development, which involved collaboration between Sanctuary and Paisley housing associations, was raised at a recent Renfrewshire Council meeting by Councillor Bruce MacFarlane.

The SNP rep for Paisley Southeast applauded the initiative in a motion, noting the "intent" of the administration to "expand social housing affordable homes at every opportunity" in Renfrewshire.

He has since said: "I was delighted that my motion to full council was unanimously backed by fellow councillors.

"Housing should be seen as a basic human right and not a luxury.

"In our society, housing has turned into a commodity where private landlords buy the housing stock to then charge it back to private tenants at extortionate prices.

"That is why I welcome the completion of this social housing development, which highlights the commitment of myself and the SNP to high quality, affordable social housing in Paisley.

"I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who worked on this site to complete this project.

"It was great to go along to the official ribbon cutting ceremony where it stayed mostly dry."

Councillor Marie McGurk, convener of the communities and housing policy board, said: "There's been a lot of people who have worked really hard on this project in particularly difficult circumstances during the pandemic.

"Now the houses are ready and people are moving into these new homes."

The SNP's Councillor McGurk, who also represents Paisley Southeast, added that more than 400 new homes will be delivered between 2022 and 2023 across the local authority area.

She added: "I will send out an updated note to all members of the chamber, so they are aware of the ones in their areas."
