Brett Maher wrapped up preseason on a positive note in the Denver Broncos’ preseason finale on Saturday, but his overall performance wasn’t perfect.
Maher went 2-of-2 on field goal attempts and 5-of-5 on extra point attempts, but the kicker also had a kickoff go out of bounds, a penalty that spots the ball at the 40-yard line. Overall, it was a good night for Maher, but it remains to be seen if it will be enough.
Broncos coach Sean Payton has said multiple teams this offseason that Maher was competing against other kickers who could become available during roster cuts.
In addition to free agent kickers like Mason Crosby, Robbie Gould, Ryan Succop, Randy Bullock and Rodrigo Blankenship, there are (presumably) seven kickers who are set to be cut this week.
Seven teams have two kickers on their rosters as of this morning, which means seven of the following 13 kickers will likely become available by Tuesday. (We did not include Brandon McManus on this list because we’re assuming he’ll make the Jaguars’ roster, and he’s unlikely to return to Denver.) Here’s the list of non-McManus kickers who faced competition in camp this summer.
