There are 125 firefighters battling a massive blaze in London tonight (Tuesday) after a pub in Trafalgar Square caught light.
London Fire Brigade said half the basement of The Admiralty pub was alight. Photos and video on social media showed huge plumes of smoke billowing from the building, with people being warned to avoid the area.
Station Commander Keith McDermott, who is at the scene, told PA: “The fire is in the basement of a pub in Trafalgar Square. As a result there will be heavy traffic disruption and we ask people to avoid the area if possible.”
The fire brigade was called at just before 5.50pm. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
The number of firefighters tackling the blaze was increased shortly before 8pm amid “arduous” conditions, LFB said. Around 125 firefighters were then at the scene.
Station Commander Keith McDermott said: “Due to the arduous, challenging and hot conditions inside the basement we’ve increased the number of fire engines and firefighters at the scene.
“Around 150 people evacuated the pub and surrounding businesses before the brigade arrived. There has been no reports of any injuries.”
