12-year-old dies of dengue in Kolkata, govt calls meet

KOLKATA: A 12-year old resident of Mahim Halder Lane in Kalighat died of dengue on Thursday morning. This is the first dengue death in the city this monsoon, according to Kolkata Municipal Corporation records. Kalighat is a dengue-prone area and has recorded hundreds of cases in the recent past.

Family sources said Biswak Mukherjee, a Class VII student of St Helen School, tested positive for dengue four days ago and was under treatment by a private practitioner at home. However, as his condition deteriorated, Biswak was rushed to a private hospital off EM Bypass. His platelet count dropped sharply and a subsequent abnormality was found in his blood pressure level. Biswak was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit. However, despite efforts by a team of doctors, the boy breathed his last on Thursday.
