Authorities in Australia's Northern Territory have launched a search and rescue operation for a missing 12-year-old child who was reportedly attacked by a crocodile. The incident took place in Palumpa, a remote town known by its Aboriginal name Nganmarriyanga, located approximately seven hours by road from the territory capital, Darwin.
The child was reported missing on Tuesday evening after swimming in a creek in the area. Senior Sergeant Erica Gibson expressed condolences to the family and community, stating that local officers are actively involved in the search efforts. The search is focused on a large section of the creek and is being conducted via boat, with the assistance of the community.
The Northern Territory is home to over 100,000 crocodiles, some of which can reach lengths of up to six meters (20 feet). Despite the significant crocodile population in the region, fatal attacks are considered rare occurrences.
