12 of the funniest and punniest food takeaway names in Northern Ireland

The Northern Irish sense of humour is often unmatched and it's a well-known fact that we don't take ourselves too seriously.

We've all been driving down the street of a local NI town or village and spot a business sign that has got us giggling to ourselves or sending it into our group chats.

While hairdressers are known for some great pun-related business names, our chippies and other fast-food takeaways have been stealing the show in recent years.

We have compiled a list of some of the punniest names that have got us cracking a smile:

Thai Tanic, Lisburn Road

This South Belfast Thai restaurant serves up the classics cooked-up in a modern, glass-fronted noodle bar. Clearly inspired by the city's ship making past, this one always gets people talking as they walk by.

Oh My Cod, Ardoyne

Here come the cod related jokes... A simple but classic fish-related pun that no one will ever forget when they are thinking about where to get their next chippy.

Wok Inn, Downpatrick

Wok Inn, Downpatrick (Google)

The Wok Inn in Co Down tells customers exactly how they can order their curry half and half. Oh, and they also do delivery too.

Bia Rebel, Ormeau Road

Bia Rebel, Ormeau Road (Google)

Located in the heart of South Belfast, this ramen and noodle bar is a play on words of 'be a rebel'. Bia comes from the Irish word meaning 'food' and we can always appreciate humour with some thought behind it.

Toast Office

2021 was the year of the cheese toastie and you can almost pin it down to these guys. First opening at the Hill Street Hatch, they went viral online during lockdown - no doubt their catchy and pun related name also helped build up the hype.

The Cod Father, Newtownards

The Codfather, Lisburn (Google)

Another classic - does it really need any more explaining?!

Wok this Way, Carryduff

Wok this Way, Carryduff (Google)

No doubt inspired by the classic Run DMC ft Aerosmith (or Sugarbabes and Girls Aloud for the younger generation) song 'Walk this Way', this Chinese takeaway is one of our favourites on the list. Don't pretend you didn't sing when you read it...

Bare Bun, Lisburn Road

Bare Bun, Lisburn Road (Bare Bun/ Instagram)

A new takeaway to the scene, they have started off on a great foot with their hilarious and fitting name that has been catching eyes on the Lisburn Road even before opening. Bare Bun is a plant-based (hence the bare) burger (hence the bun) junk food restaurant that will definitely get people talking.

The Upper Crumb, Ballysillan

The Upper Crumb, Ballysillan (Google)

We think this one is quite genius - a local bakery called The Upper Crumb on the upper Crumlin Road. Simple but effective!

Yer Coddin Me, Newtownards

Yer Coddin Me, Newtownards (Yer Coddin Me/ Facebook)

We weren't joking about the cod references... A common NI slang for 'you're joking me', this Newtownards chippy is absolutely one of the most memorable on the list.

Use Your Loaf, Antrim Road

Use Your Loaf owner John Kelly (Justin Kernoghan/Belfast Live)

Another great incorporation of our Northern Irish terms and phrases to create a stand out business name. A perfect name for a Belfast bakery.

Codzilla, Belmont Road

Codzilla, Belmont Road (Codzilla/ Facebook)

This is the last cod joke, we promise! Inspired by the enormous sea monster from the Japanese film series Godzilla, this takeaway monster portions and burgers that will leave no one hungry.
