An 11-year-old boy has been attacked by a shark while surfing in Sydney’s Northern Beaches on Monday morning. The latest incident comes a day after a 13-year-old was attacked in Sydney’s Harbour.
A young surfer has managed to escape injury and flee to shore after his surfboard was bitten several times at the southern end of Dee Why Beach, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
A Surf Life Saving NSW spokesperson told the publication the beach was closed at the time of the incident due to hazardous water conditions and is expected to remain closed for up to 48 hours following the attack.

Shortly after the child made it to shore, surf lifesavers reported to the scene and a drone was deployed to surveil Dee Why Beach waters.
The type of shark involved in the incident is unknown. However, a piece of the boy’s surfboard has been sent to NSW Fisheries to help with identification.
According to the Manly Observer, witnesses claim they saw a “possibly four to five foot long” bull shark, but this remains unconfirmed.
The incident comes a day after a teenager was mauled by a shark near Vaucluse’s Shark Beach at Nielsen Park.
Police say the boy was attacked as soon as he entered the water at about 4.20pm.
The teenager currently remains in critical condition in hospital. However, police and paramedics have praised the actions of his friends, with NSW Police Superintendent Joseph McNulty telling reporters, “one of his mates jumped in and helped retrieve him from the water, and that’s some heroic actions just in itself”.
The beach is now closed, with authorities urging the public to avoid swimming in the harbour for the time being.
