11 of the funniest reviews left by people about top Scottish landmarks

There are lots of things to love about Scotland, from the breathtaking scenery and riveting history to the unrivalled welcome and the people who will make your time here all the better.

However, you can't always please everyone all of the time, and it seems that more than a few visitors to the country have left with a strong impression of a few things they don't like or are unsure about.

And, as with everything in the internet age, there is a minority who will always find something to complain about.

With the rise of review sites like TripAdvisor and social media channels like Facebook and Twitter offering people the platform to complain like never before, you're never far away from knowing someone's thoughts on a matter.

Here are some of the strangest reviews of Scotland's landmarks we've come across.

Are they all serious reviews? We'll leave that for you to decide.

Culloden Battlefield - "Super boring"

An American tourist wasn't impressed when he visited the site of the last pitched battle on Scottish soil.

Describing it as "super boring", reviewer Eric from San Francisco wrote: "Never knew there was films about this place. Also never cared for the history of this place.

"Walked the field felt nothing.. Took one picture. 11£ to go into this place, the tour brought us here and didn't include tickets. They just talked the history and walked the field. 1hr of wasted time."

While another similarly disinterested reviewer added: "It's a big field. Yawn."

Loch Ness - "No Loch Ness Monster!!!"

The angry tourist left a one-star review on TripAdvisor after the Loch Ness Monster no-show (Contributed)

One tourist from England was so incensed when he didn't see the monster on a recent trip to Loch Ness that he decided to go on a bizarre rant about it on Trip Advisor.

Leaving a one-star review he wrote: "What a disappointment. We travelled 400 miles from Grimsby to see the Loch Ness monster and it didn't show up.

"DON'T GO if you are wanting to see it because it you will end up bitterly disappointed like we were."

Ben Nevis - "Very steep and too high!"

One of the UK's most famous mountains and Scotland's highest peak did not impress one traveller.

The weary commenter, named Grim Traveller on TripAdvisor, gave a review entitled "Very steep and too high", much to the amusement of those who read it.

Complaining about a lack of facilities he rants: "This was almost a FULL day's climbing and my girlfriend was crying at one point.

"This attraction is free but I honestly couldn’t imagine anyone – and I mean anyone – paying to climb this."

Isle of Skye - "You've got to do something with the brown tablet bar of soap"

The hilarious review had people in stitches (Twitter/@SassenachExile)

Not all of these gems can be found on TripAdvisor, one hilarious review was left on The Pink Guest House in Portree's website.

Brought to light by Twitter user @SassenachExile it shows how one American tourist confused the free Tablet treat (a delicious sugary sweet) left on their pillow for a bar of soap. And well, a bit of anarchy ensues.

The tourist named Thomas wrote: "Not only was it gritty and left an oily residue but it disintegrated before the shower was done.

"I have had much better exfoliating bar scrubs."

The Kelpies - "Drive past, don't stop!"

An architectural marvel in the heart of Falkirk that's become a top tourist attraction?

Didn't impress this reviewer, who simply wrote: "You get as much enjoyment from just simply driving past as you would stopping.

"And you don't get stuffed for the parking, or have to put up with the crowds of rather bored-looking visitors all thinking the same as you!"

Edinburgh Castle - "History repeated itself the English did not get in"

The one star review of Edinburgh Castle (TripAdvisor)

As one of Scotland's busiest visitor attractions, particularly in the past pandemic period, we guess by now everyone might have released that some landmarks are going to be hard to get into.

But not this reviewer named Dr Spoons, who psoted: "We arrived after 2 hour drive with our English army only to find it had a two-week waiting list yet we were only in Scotland for 7 days

"History repeated itself the English did not get in."

While another wrote: "I mean, guys, seriously?? Why does no one advertise this castle is actually on a hill!? I’m relatively fit having ran a 5K in 2012 but even I had to stop 4 times on the way up."

Arthur's Seat - "I looked like I soiled myself"

Situated within Holyrood Park and with stunning views of the capital, a walk up Arthur's Seat is one of the true pleasures on offer in Edinburgh.

Not everyone agrees though.

One reviewer who slapped it with a one-star review wrote: "Not a chair in sight - had to sit on the grass, and was left with an unsightly wet patch so it looked like I had soiled myself."

Glenfinnan Viaduct - "Very decieving"

The review of the Glenfinnan Viaduct (TripAdvisor)

Thanks to Harry Potter, the Glenfinnan Viaduct has become something of a tourist attraction in its own right, with thousands flocking to see the Jacobite Steam Train as it crosses.

Judite G from Spain however, was not impressed, they wrote: "From the postcards and Harry Potter it seemed so much larger and majestic. This was our great deception in our entire trip to Scotland."

Kingarth Standing Stones, Isle of Bute - "If spooky is what you are looking for this is the place to go"

Some of the complaints didn't come down to anything to do with the physical location but instead the "vibe" of the landmark.

User Travel_Teddybears posted this review of the enigmatic standing stones: "We love standing stones and have gone to them all over Scotland from Orkney to the Outer Hebrides, but this ring I don't like.

"It is always dark, even in summer, and very opressive [sic]. There is a dark atmosphere that frightens the life out of me.

"I heard there was a wedding here the other day.....brave couple !!

"If you are looking for atmospherics this is the place for you, but not me !!"

The Wallace Monument - "Sir William must be doing triple somersaults in his grave at this insult to his memory"

Katrine D didn't hold back on her thoughts of the Wallace Monument (TripAdvisor)

Angry visitor Katrine D wasn't happy with the pricing for this famous monument.

"Tourist trap? Tourist con, more like! Sir William must be doing triple somersaults in his grave at this insult to his memory. (I have been inside the tower, and it is worth visiting, just not at the entrance fees charged)."

The Callanish Standing Stones - "I was expecting them to be lit up with lasers"

Speaking about the stunning standing stones, which were the inspiration for the Craigh na Dun standing stones in Outlander, user SpaceRider said they were "underwhelmed".

They wrote: "I felt the stones were ok but I was expecting them to be lit up with lasers or something. Plus in today's modern age there should be speakers on each stone playing background music."
