One hundred pigs died in a horror crash in Monaghan last week after a lorry that was carrying them overturned.
The heavy goods vehicle was transporting 430 pigs when it overturned at the Coolshannagh roundabout in Monaghan around 9.30am on Tuesday, March 29, in a single-vehicle incident.
Fire crews attended the scene and managed to free the pigs from the lorry but sadly 100 pigs were fatality injured and died as a result of the crash.
A Veterinary Inspector from the Department of Agriculture attended to the surviving 330 pigs at the scene, which were kept in a live enclosure until they were moved to safety.
In a statement to the Irish Mirror, a spokesperson from the Department of Agriculture said: "I can confirm that a Department Veterinary Inspector attended the scene of an unfortunate road traffic accident [on March 29] in Co. Monaghan.
"The lorry was carrying approximately 430 pigs, of which 100 did not survive.
"The Department’s Veterinary Inspector got to the scene very shortly after receiving a report of the accident, and attended to the welfare of the approximately 330 surviving animals which were moved to safety as soon as it was safe to do so."

Monaghan Fire Service responded to the incident and set up an enclosure for the remaining live pigs, who were later transported to their destination in Letterkenny.
In a statement, they said: "We can confirm that Monaghan fire Brigade attended an accident [Tuesday] morning involving a lorry carrying pigs. The driver was extricated and transferred by National Ambulance Service to hospital."
The road towards Monaghan town was closed following the crash but re-opened the same day.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed they also attended the scene of the crash and said that investigations are ongoing.
The lorry driver, aged in his late 40s, was removed from the pig truck by members of the emergency services and was taken to the local hospital by ambulance but his injuries were not life-threatening.
