A comfortable salary used to mean a little room for spontaneity. Families could grab dinner without calculating every side dish, book a vacation without a financial strategy session or replace a failing appliance without rearranging the month’s bills. Now, even households earning good money often find themselves reconsidering ordinary purchases.
The numbers help explain the frustration. U.S. consumer prices rose 3.7% over the 12 months ending in September 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Grocery prices rose more slowly than overall inflation, but restaurant meals, gasoline and airfare presented different challenges. These increases also come on top of earlier price hikes that already pushed household budgets higher.
