10-second TikTok trend leaves girl with burn that could take two years to heal

A young girl was left with a painful injury to her hand after trying a dangerous TikTok trend.

The 10-year-old was taken to hospital after sustaining a serious burn from a deodorant can. The trend on the social media platform involves spraying the deodorant onto your hand to make it feel ice-cold.

When the girl tried out the trend with a friend, spraying the can just an inch away from her skin for around 10 seconds, she was left with a nasty burn mark on the back of her hand. At hospital she was told the wound was likely to take between 18 months and two years to heal completely, The Mirror reports .

Doctors also told the girl that she may need plastic surgery in the future because of the injury. Her mum has since issued a warning to other parents to make their children aware of the dangers of viral trends.

“10 seconds of stupidity has left her with two years of pain,” the 39-year-old mum from Hertfordshire told The Mirror. She added that she had been shocked to find out what had happened to her daughter, who is “such a sensible little girl normally” who “never gets in trouble”.

The mum admitted that the 10-year-old could not enjoy the summer because of the injury, left unable to go swimming or go out in the sun with the burn. “Those 10 seconds have ruined her next few years,” she said.

A spokesperson for TikTok said: "We care deeply about the safety and wellbeing of our community.

"We actively remove content that depicts dangerous challenges and prompt people who search for it to visit our Safety Centre, where they can find an in-app guide for engaging with an online challenge, developed with leading youth safety experts."
