Most of us can identify a Georgian build, know Brutalism when we see it and could even take an educated guess at Sixties versus Seventies.
But the lines get a little blurrier around the ephemeral Arts & Crafts movement.
A cluster of architects modelled this very British style after the arts movement of the same name, which saw main proponent William Morris attempt to re-establish the use of traditional craft skills as a rallying cry against mass production.
Distinctive yet hard to define, the movement’s know-it-when-you-see-it design relished in asymmetry, idiosyncratic details and the use of local materials.
Purists will note that the ‘true’ Arts & Crafts homes were built just after the turn of the century (spot the gems below) but some housebuilders into the Twenties and Thirties incorporated Arts & Crafts thinking into their designs.
