Since first crossing paths in 2001, Paul Thomas Anderson's wife, Maya Rudolph, and the acclaimed director have maintained one of Hollywood's most private yet enduring partnerships.
Now residing in Los Angeles with their four children, Pearl, Lucille, Jack and Minnie, the couple has famously spent 25 years together without ever legally marrying, choosing instead to define their commitment on their own terms.
This unique bond remains a rare example of long-term devotion in the spotlight, proving that a certificate isn't necessary for a soulful union.
The comedic actress rose to prominence on Saturday Night Live and later cemented her status in cinema with roles in major hits such as Bridesmaids and Grown Ups. At the same time, Anderson has established a prestigious reputation behind the camera, crafting celebrated works such as Boogie Nights and Licorice Pizza.
His most recent effort, One Battle After Another, entered the 2026 Oscars as a top contender, ultimately winning Best Picture during the ceremony held on 15 March.
The pair are notoriously private about their personal life, but they do make the odd exception for red carpet events or when sharing small stories about each other in the press.

A notable moment came during the December 2025 Gotham Awards. While accepting the Best Feature prize for One Battle After Another, Anderson took a moment to thank Rudolph with a heartfelt tribute from the stage. 'December 1st, 24 years ago, I met a lady who made me a better filmmaker. Happy anniversary, Maya,' he said.

Below is a closer look at the enduring bond between Maya Rudolph and Paul Thomas Anderson.
A Chance Meeting in 2001
The couple's history dates back to 2001, a timeline Anderson himself confirmed while speaking at the Gotham Awards in December 2025. Reflecting on their early days in an April 2024 interview with Town & Country, Rudolph mentioned that the director was instantly smitten.
'He said he saw me in [an SNL] sketch and said, "That's the girl I'm going to marry." But I don't know. I wasn't there. Maybe he just told me that to be sweet,' she said.
A Partnership Without a Wedding
The couple have shared their lives for over 20 years, yet they have never officially tied the knot. Even without a marriage certificate, Rudolph still refers to Anderson as her husband when speaking about him.

While speaking to The New York Times in September 2018, the actress admitted she felt 'ooky' about using the term boyfriend for Anderson once they became parents. Since the arrival of their eldest child, she has consistently used the title husband instead.
'People know what that means. It means he's the father of my child, and I live with him, and we are a couple, and we are not going anywhere,' she said.
A Family of Six
The couple became parents for the first time in October 2005 with the arrival of their daughter, Pearl. Her birth was famously announced to the world by Tina Fey, who called the newborn 'the little peanut' during an episode of Saturday Night Live.
Their family grew again four years later with the birth of a second daughter, Lucille. By July 2011, a representative for Rudolph confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple had welcomed their third child, a son named Jack.

'I'm a little bit of a pro. The stuff that I used to fear and used to worry about is so different, like the first time I brought [Pearl] home from the hospital, I think I was in the backseat, putting my finger under her nose, making sure she was breathing, [and] asking my husband to drive three miles per hour,' she told PEOPLE during her third pregnancy. She joked, 'By the third child, we didn't even have a car seat anymore.'
Rudolph and Anderson completed their family in 2013 with the birth of their youngest daughter, Minnie Ida. When asked a year later about having more children, she replied, 'Hell no. I would be a crazy person if that happened!,' she told PEOPLE.
Professional Collaborations
The actress has appeared in brief roles in two of Anderson's projects: Inherent Vice and Licorice Pizza. She took on the part of a matchmaking nurse named Petunia Leeway in the former, while in the latter, she portrayed a casting director.
The couple's children also had the chance to appear in Licorice Pizza. During a June 2022 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Rudolph spoke about the wonderful experience of having her kids join her on set for the movie.
A Partnership That Inspires Art
Set in 1950s London, Anderson's 2017 feature Phantom Thread explores the intense bond between a renowned dressmaker and his muse, Alma. As the story unfolds, Alma transitions from his partner to his nurse, eventually resorting to poisoning him as a way to ensure he remains under her care and influence.
Anderson has explained that the core idea for the movie was born from his own life with Rudolph, specifically a lighthearted moment during a bout of the flu. While he was bedridden, he noticed his partner looking down at him with such genuine care that he found himself playfully wondering if she might actually enjoy keeping him weak and dependent for a little while.
