LED face masks have become one of the most talked-about beauty devices in recent years, promising clinic-rivalling skincare from the comfort of your sofa. While IPL machines use light and sometimes lasers to tackle unwanted hair, LED technology and red light therapy focuses on improving the appearance of the skin itself, making it increasingly popular to curb the effects of ageing and environmental aggressors.
With lots of hearsay on the matter, deciphering truth from fiction can feel like a full-time job – but the science is becoming more convincing.* In a 2023 clinical study in the Skin Research & Technology journal involving 20 participants, one specific LED mask (the Skin Light Dior × Lucibel device) was shown to improve multiple signs of skin ageing when used consistently. After just one month, researchers recorded a 15.6 per cent reduction in crow's feet depth, a 26.4 per cent increase in dermal density and a 28.5 per cent decrease in pore diameter, with further improvements seen after months two and three.
